Hospital Bag Checklist
Pack for the stay you might actually have
Hospital births vary. Pack the basics for the birthing parent, the partner or support person, and the baby, but do not overbuild the bag into a miniature apartment. The point is to reduce friction if the stay is longer, shorter, or messier than planned 12.
Keep these easy to find
- IDs, insurance or coverage cards, and any required registration paperwork.
- Medications and copies of relevant instructions.
- Phone charger, headphones, and a small amount of cash or payment method if your hospital uses it.
Bring for comfort
- Clothes you can wear while tired and slightly squashed.
- Toiletries and glasses or contacts if needed.
- Snacks and water bottle for the support person, if allowed.
Baby items
- One going-home outfit.
- Car seat installed before discharge.
- Any item your hospital told you to bring specifically.
What to skip
Anything that adds a lot of packing or cleanup without solving a real problem can usually stay home. The hospital already has more equipment than your bag does.
