Strollers and Carriers

Start with your routes

The right stroller or carrier depends less on brand and more on where you will actually use it. Stairs, sidewalks, gravel, public transit, storage space, and trunk size all matter more than brochure features 12.

Strollers

  • Look for a secure harness, reliable brakes, and a fold you can do without a wrestling match.
  • Make sure the stroller can carry the child’s current size comfortably.
  • Check whether accessories are intended for sleep or only for transport.
  • Think about whether you will lift it alone, one-handed, with groceries, or in bad weather.

Carriers

  • Choose a carrier that supports the baby safely and fits the adult well enough to use repeatedly.
  • Check that the baby’s face stays visible and clear of fabric.
  • If the carrier is hard to put on, you will probably use it less than you expect.

Practical tradeoffs

Strollers are better when the trip is long, the baby may nap, or you want storage. Carriers are better when the route has stairs, narrow paths, or lots of in-and-out movement. Many families end up using both, but the first purchase should match the route that happens most often.
