Uncircumcised Care
Uncircumcised care in infancy is mostly about restraint. The key rule is simple: do not force the foreskin back. In babies and young children the foreskin is commonly still attached to the glans and is not meant to be retracted for cleaning 123.
What routine care looks like
Wash the outside of the penis the same way you clean the rest of the diaper area. Wipe away stool and urine, rinse or bathe gently when needed, and dry the skin without rubbing 12. There is no hidden cleaning step you are supposed to be doing under the foreskin in a newborn.
Why forced retraction is a bad idea
Trying to pull the foreskin back early can cause pain, bleeding, and small tears that make future irritation more likely 12. It also creates exactly the kind of avoidable problem that then gets mistaken for a medical condition. A newborn penis requires much less intervention than many adults assume.
What is normal later on
As boys grow, the foreskin gradually separates and becomes more retractable over years, not days. That timeline varies widely and does not need to be rushed 12. White material called smegma can appear under the foreskin later as part of normal separation; it is not usually a reason to start manipulating the skin.
When to call the same day
Call if your baby is not urinating, if swelling or redness is increasing, if there is foul discharge, fever, or clear pain with urination, or if the penis looks progressively more inflamed rather than simply ordinary for a newborn 123.
