Starting to babyproof before mobility really starts

Babyproofing is easier before the baby can get into the trouble you were not expecting. A little advance work now is worth much more than a panicked cleanup later 12.

Start with the obvious hazards

Anchor furniture that can tip, move cords and small objects out of reach, and keep medications, cleaning products, and other poisonous items fully inaccessible 13.

Re-think floor level

Once the baby starts rolling or pivoting, floor space becomes the main play zone. That means the floor needs to be clean enough, safe enough, and uncluttered enough that the baby can explore without finding a tiny surprise in every direction 12.

What to delay

Do not buy every gadget at once. A baby who is not yet moving may not need a dozen products, but they do need the adults to notice the next risk before the baby encounters it.

What to keep in mind for sleep

Safe sleep remains the rule even when the baby is getting stronger. A safe sleep space should still be firm, flat, and free of loose items 2.
